A PHOTOVOLTAIC CELL CONVERTS LIGHT INTO ELECTRIC CURRENT.
TO CREATE AN ELECTRIC FIELD WITHIN A PV CELL TWO LAYERS OF
DIFFERENT SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIALS ARE PLACED IN CONTACT WITH
ONE ANOTHER. WHEN LIGHT IS ABSORBED THE ENERGY CREATES A FLOW
OF ELECTRICITY SIMILAR TO A BATTERY ( DC POWER ).
WHEN MANY OF THESE PV CELLS ARE HOOKED TOGETHER THIS IS A SOLAR
PANEL OR SOLAR MODULE- NORMALLY PRODUCING FROM 60 TO 200 WATTS ER
MODULE. THESE MODULES CAN BE ARRANGED IN STRINGS ( SERIES ) AND THEN
ARRAYS ( PARALLEL ). TO CREATE A SMALL OR LARGE ELECTRICAL GENERATION
SYSTEM.
THIS DIRECT CURRENT FROM THE SOLAR MODULES MUST BE CONVERTED TO
ALTERNATING CURRENT VIA AN INVERTER. THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN
INVERTERS PUT POWER INTO THE ELECTRICAL GRID PERFECTLY IN PHASE WITH
THE GRID POWER. THE INVERTER WILL NOT FEED POWER INTO THE METER IF THE
POWER GRID IS DOWN ( FOR SAFETY REASONS ). THIS FLOW OF POWER WILL
SPIN THE ELECTRIC METER BACKWARDS AND YOU CAN BE PAID FOR THIS
POWER ( NET METERING ).
A TYPICAL SYSTEM CONTAINS: SOLAR MODULES , COMBINER BOXES , DC
DISCONNECT , INVERTER , AC CIRCUIT BREAKERS , CONNECTION TO ELECTRIC
METER , AND OPTIONAL DATA ACQUISITION AND MONITORING. WITH A SYSTEM
SUCH AS THIS YOU CAN BECOME A CARBON FREE ELECTRICITY PROVIDER.
